The reverse T3 test measures the amount of reverse T3 (rT3) in your blood. To understand this, it's helpful to know a bit about thyroid hormones. Your thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate your metabolism, with the main ones being T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). T4 is often converted into T3, which is the active form your body uses. However, under certain stressors, T4 can also be converted into reverse T3, an inactive form that doesn’t help with metabolism.
Why would someone get a reverse T3 test?
If you’re experiencing symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, depression, or cold intolerance, and standard thyroid tests (like TSH, T3, and T4) don't explain them, a doctor might order this test. Reverse T3 can be high during times of stress, illness, injury, or if something is off with your body's hormone conversion process. Essentially, the test helps figure out if your body is blocking thyroid hormones from working properly by making too much reverse T3, which doesn’t help metabolism.
By looking at reverse T3 levels along with other thyroid hormone levels, doctors can better understand issues with your thyroid and metabolism. This helps them tailor your treatment more effectively, possibly by adjusting thyroid medication or addressing underlying stressors.
