The MTHFR test looks at your genes to see if there are any changes in a specific gene called MTHFR, which stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This gene is important because it helps your body process folate (a type of B vitamin) and other nutrients properly.
People with certain changes in the MTHFR gene might have higher levels of a substance called homocysteine in their blood. High homocysteine can be linked to health issues like heart disease. People may also experience fatigue, weakness, depression, anxiety, pregnancy complications, and even blood clotting issues.
If you find out you have an MTHFR gene variation providers can guide you on diets, supplements, and lifestyle changes that can help.
