Hepatitis A, B, and C are infections that affect the liver. Here's a basic breakdown:
- Hepatitis A is usually spread through contaminated food or water. It's generally a short-term illness, and most people recover without long-term effects. However, it can make you feel pretty sick, with symptoms like fatigue, nausea, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
- Hepatitis B can be more serious. It's mainly spread through contact with infectious body fluids, like blood or semen. This can happen during unprotected sex, sharing needles, or from a mother to her baby at birth. Hepatitis B can lead to long-term liver problems, including liver damage and cancer.
- Hepatitis C is usually spread through blood contact, often through sharing needles or unsanitary tattooing. Unlike Hep A and B, there's no vaccine for Hep C. It often becomes a long-term infection, leading to serious liver damage over time if not treated.
Getting checked for hepatitis is crucial, especially if you're at risk or experiencing symptoms. Early detection allows for better management and treatment, helping to prevent serious liver complications and stopping the spread of the virus to others. Getting tested is a proactive step in taking care of your health!
