G6PD (only needed checked once in a lifetime)
The G6PD test checks for levels of an enzyme crucial for protecting red blood cells. If you have G6PD deficiency, your red blood cells can break down easily, leading to hemolytic anemia (Hemolytic anemia is when your body destroys red blood cells faster than it can replace them, leading to fatigue and other symptoms due to insufficient oxygen transport). Knowing your G6PD status is important, especially since certain foods (fava beans, other legumes), medications (Sulfa antibiotics like bactrim, nitrofurantoin, and quinolones), Aspirin at high doses, NSAIDs, Anti-fever medication can trigger this. It is also important if you're considering high-dose vitamin C (more than 21 grams), which can stress red blood cells and cause anemia in those with the deficiency. This helps ensure safe and informed decisions regarding treatments and supplements.
