The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common virus that most people will encounter at some point in their lives. It's best known for causing infectious mononucleosis, often called "mono" or the "kissing disease" because it spreads through saliva. Once you're infected, the virus stays dormant in your body and can reactivate later, though it usually won't cause symptoms upon reactivation.

Symptoms of an EBV infection include fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and sometimes a swollen spleen or liver. These symptoms can mimic other illnesses, making it tricky to diagnose without a test. The EBV test is a blood test that checks for antibodies, which are immune responses your body creates when infected. By identifying these antibodies, we can determine if you have a current or past EBV infection. The good news is that most people recover without any serious issues and build lifelong immunity.
