The blood type and Rh test is a simple lab test that identifies your blood group (A, B, AB, or O) and your Rh factor (positive or negative).
- Blood Type: Everyone's blood is one of four main types, determined by the presence or absence of certain substances on the surface of red blood cells. Knowing your blood type is crucial for blood transfusions, as receiving the wrong type can cause serious reactions.
- Rh Factor: This is another substance that may or may not be present on red blood cells. If you have this substance, you're Rh positive; if not, you're Rh negative. Rh factor is especially important in pregnancy; an Rh-negative mother needs careful management if her baby is Rh positive.
In essence, knowing your blood type is important for safe medical care, including transfusions, pregnancies, and even emergencies where blood needs to be matched quickly.
